Best 5 Songs to Take Yourself Less Seriously

Music is a huge part of my life. It is one of the few things that I wouldn’t be able to live without (and this isn’t hyperbole!) But, music doesn’t always have to be emotional and meaningful. Sometimes, it can just be some silly fun that puts a smile on your face.

Here are five songs that I guarantee will make you look at life a little bit differently and lighten up.

5. The Spageti Song – SexBomb Girls

This song is incredibly iconic to Filipinos, both in the motherland and the diaspora population around the world! The SexBomb Girls started off as dancers on a variety show before dominating the country. They were also Asia’s best selling girl group for a decade (1999-2009) before the rise of Kpop.

The lyrics are mostly nonsense which is why it became so popular. It was a staple at Filipino parties worldwide, and even came with its own choreography for people to follow along to.

Personally, this is a song that reminds me to just have fun. Not everything needs to make sense, and sometimes, that’s the best part.

4. I’m On A Boat – The Lonely Island

Honestly, I’m surprised this hasn’t made a comeback as a meme. Even until this day, I still don’t understand if there was any other message in this song apart from being on a boat.

Previously, I saw people trying to debate a deeper meaning but where’s the fun in that? They’re on a boat, just like Samuel L. Jackson was stuck on motherfucking snakes on a motherfucking plane.

Also, my Stay1 brain also likens it to “SEUNGMIN IN THE BUILDING!”

Clearly I spend too much time on the internet.

3. This Is A Pen – ENSOKU

This is one of those “you had to be there” songs, but it is also the reason why I thought of writing up this list.

Before PPAP, we had This Is A Pen. It is a treasure in the world of visual kei2 from the golden era. The joke behind the song is the English phrases taught to students in Japan during the 00’s and early 2010’s were essentially useless in actual conversations.

And yes, “this is a pen” was actually taught as part of their English lessons.

I would even dare call this song satire. Fun, loud, badly filmed satire. That’s why it’s so good!

2. Galactic Mermaid – Mermaid Sisters (Carole and Tuesday OST)

I came across this gem of a song through watching Carole and Tuesday on Netflix. If you love music, anime, and wholesome stories, I highly recommend you watch the series.

This song is one of my favourites for when I’m frustrated and annoyed at the world. You’ll understand within seconds of listening, and if you don’t think it’s brilliant, then I’m surprised you made it this far down the list.

In case you didn’t know, the full version of the song is available both on Spotify and YouTube. It’s two full minutes of beautiful acapella vocals with lyrics I’m sure we can all relate to.

1. Kkulchong EDM Remix – Bang Chan (Stray Kids)

Believe it or not, this is one of my favourite songs. The thing is, it’s not even an official release, which makes it even more hilarious to me.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Stray Kids, this song was produced on episode 158 of Channie’s Room—a weekly livestream run by Bang Chan. In this particular episode, he received a request from one of his group members, Lee Know, to produce a song based on Changbin’s “kkulchong” sound files.

The end result was this, and I can’t express enough just how much I love it. Though, my favourite video includes snippets of Bang Chan making the song and a couple of phone calls to his members.
